Our dance film is a solo performance about the inner feelings of a man facing death. The man is placed into a narrow and dark well lit only from above. For a while he struggles trying to find space for his movements, but he knocks into the wall from every direction, he pushes and beats himself against them but to no avail. Then he realizes that the only direction out is to let go and give in to the uncompromising force working in him.
We portray the drama preceding death: pain, struggle and release through focusing on the changes of bodily posture and the strength and energy of voluntary and involuntary moves of bodyparts in a bare, minimalist environment. The camera shows close ups of the dancer naturalistically, all light is on the skin, the background recedes into darkness, shadows are stark as on the paintings of Caravaggio. Super 8 highlights the textures.We use the sounds of drum as if summoning the dancer for battle and then periodically let the beat quiet and sounds from childhood sip in as the transgression unfolds.
