Don't Fuss!

Premier at MU Theatre, Budapest, 2014

awards, drums, feelings, trauma

The duo of Rita Góbi and Dávid Szegő

The dance performance is researching the elements of a relationship focusing on hysteria and the aftermath. The performance is connecting the rhythm of the drums and the humour that is „hidden“ in a couple's daily life, but this can be observed by an outsider. And the outsiders are sitting and watching and laughing. On us. And at themselves, too.

For this performance, Rita Góbi received the Best Hungarian Contemporary Dancer Award

and also the Best Solo Dancer Award at SoloDuo Festival in Cologne, Germany in 2015.

The accolade for the finest utilization of music is bestowed upon the production "Don't Fuss" by Hungary's Gobi Dance company. This recognition is a tribute to their masterful fusion of movement and music, a symphony woven through elements of contrast and harmony, resulting in a captivating and uniquely charming performance.  - 2023. Nisville Jazz Festival, Serbia

'Don't Fuss' [ ...] displays structured madness full of nuances. It is a choreography that stays with and transcends the materiality of the body. Rita draws us into the experience of an overwhelming emotional state but remains the master of ceremony on stage.' - Laudatio Soloduo Festival, Cologne, 2015

'The drummer needs the instrument to make the sound; the drum needs the drummer’s rhythmical movements to create it; the dancer needs the music, and by association, the musician; the musician needs the dancer to embody, to live the rhythm, to bring it further. Yet, there is a constant questioning of these dependencies, and attempts to break the bond. How far can a dancer go with a bunch of drums without the musician? How far can the drummer go without movements? “Don’t Fuss!” deals with the conflicts of communication, the closeness and distance, the borders between two artists’ territories and their ways of expression.’ - Nikolett Németh In. Samizdat Online, 2017

"The Hungarian company Gobi Dance brought the curtains down on the festival's competitive program with their captivating music and dance performance titled "Don't Fuss!" A charming and clever duo delving into the contrasting realms of togetherness, depicting both its heavenly joys and tumultuous challenges. Drummer David Sego and dancer Rita Gobi forged an exquisite partnership, an inseparable fusion of drum rhythms and graceful movements. This silent yet eloquent collaboration poignantly captures the intricate power struggles within interpersonal relationships. We were granted the privilege to observe the evolving journey of conquering both tangible and symbolic authority, a testament that conflict and destruction are not definitive solutions, but rather a pathway towards comprehending the authentic potency of unity and reconciliation." (Ana Tasic - https://anasttasic.wordpress.com/2023/08/12/put-u-kosmos-na-krilima-muzickog-pozorista/)
